The Rotary Club of Bixby is active in numerous community projects including:
YOUTH DEVELOPMENT AND SUPPORT
Third Grade Dictionaries
Eliminating illiteracy is one of Rotary’s key projects. Last year, we
distributed over 800 dictionaries to 3rd grade students in Bixby,
Liberty, Mounds, Glenpool, and Haskell. Each student receives
a dictionary with their personalized nameplate inside.
CHOICES
CHOICES is an interactive, decision-making workshop that teaches 8th grade students how to
achieve academic success and pursue their career and life aspirations. Through the sharing of
real life experiences of our Rotarians combined with a dynamic curriculum, students discover
they can take charge of their lives by making wise choices in their everyday decisions.
InterAct of Bixby High School
InterAct is a self-governing Rotary high school club. The students will
complete at least two community service projects, one of which will
further international understanding and goodwill.
Rotary Youth Leadership Camps
Several students a year participate in Rotary
Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA), a camp
where students develop leadership, communication,
and problem solving skills in a safe, friendly, and
supportive environment.
High School Scholarships
Each year, three high school students are awarded college scholarships.
Since inception, over $30,000 in scholarship monies have been granted.
Shop With A Cop
Shop-with-a-Cop is a cooperative youth intervention program involving local
law enforcement, Bixby Rotary and the Bixby Wal-Mart store. Youth are selected
to participate in a Christmas shopping trip with Police Officers and Rotarians.
The average cost per student is around $100 and is funded from proceeds from
the BBQ 'n Music Festival.
Shoes for Orphan Souls
From 2004 through 2010, Bixby Rotary has
donated 4653 pairs of shoes to orphans in the
U.S. and throughout the world. On this project
we lead all other clubs in our Rotary District.
FAMILY SUPPORT
Bixby Outreach Center (BOC)
BOC provides help with food, clothing and other essential services to
families in crisis in our community. Our club was the primary sponsor that
helped establish BOC and we have remained its primary source of funding
since its inception. To date, we have donated over $120,000 to this organization.
Daily Family YMCA
Last year, our club helped the YMCA build strong kids,
strong families and strong communities with a $5000 donation.
Annual Christmas Parade
Hosted by the Rotary Club of Bixby, the annual Christmas Parade is held in
Downtown Bixby,
which is south and east of 151st and Memorial. A favorite
holiday event, this community and family oriented parade features a variety
of floats, autos, bands and walking groups! Trophies are awarded for Best
in Show, First, Second, and Third place.
INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS:
Medical Supplies to Developing Countries
Thousands of lives in developing countries are being saved by the efforts of the
Medical Supplies Network, Inc. Through M.S.N.I., Surplus medical supplies and
equipment are donated and shipped to 38 countries around the world. Members
of the Rotary Club of Bixby sponsored the shipment of containers to Uganda and Belize.
Vision Quest Eye Glass Kits
People living in remote locations of developing countries have a difficult, if not impossible, time of obtaining simple reading glasses. This has a tremendous impact on their livelihood and quality of life. This project provides eye glass kits that can make 300 pairs of glasses per kit. This project began in 2009 and to date, 1600 pairs of glasses have been made available to people in 5 countries.
Bixby BBQ & Blues Festival
Without question, this is Bixby’s largest and most successful community event. Officially sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society, the Festival is truly the best barbeque competition in Oklahoma. From the beginning, the festival was designed as a “family friendly” event. There’s plenty of music, plenty of activities for the children, and the best tasting BBQ on the planet. This event has allowed our club to funnel over $450,000 into the programs mentioned above.
