Eliminating illiteracy is one of Rotary's key projects. With this project, The Rotary Club of Bixby provides dictionaries to 3rd grade students in Bixby, Liberty, Mounds, Glenpool, and Haskell.
Each student receives a dictionary with their personalized nameplate inside.
Enrollment is up at most of the schools this year, and we plan to give out over 850 student dictionaries for 2011. With 33 classrooms, and over 850 dictionaries to present, we will need as many Rotarians as possible to be a part of this very rewarding service project. It goes without saying that the volunteer needs will greater at the schools with the most classrooms.
When thinking about the Rotary tag line, "Service Above Self", I can't personanly think of a better service project than this one. Words simply can't explain the feeling that one receives when personally handing a 3rd grade boy or girl their very first dictionary.
